DID YOU KNOW?...
* The first ever Melbourne Cup, an idea of Captain Frederick Standish, was first run in 1861, at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.
* The Melbourne Cup was first run on a Thursday but since has been run on the first Tuesday of November each year except for the years of the second World War, where it was run on a Saturday.
* The Cup is run over 3200 Metres (it was 2 miles until Australia went metric in the early '70's) and is the richest race on the Australasian Circuit.
* The Melbourne Cup is known as "the race that stops a nation" and in Melbourne the Tuesday is declared a public holiday. Much of the nation, and since the advent of TV and the world wide web, the planet, tune in somehow to watch or listen to this iconic Australian race.
* For many, the Melbourne Cup triggers the name of the 1930 Cup winner, Phar Lap, or 'The Red Terror', arguably the most famous race horse in the world. After being shot by gangsters in the late 1920's, Phar Lap's controversial and mysterious death in California in 1932 still has many conspiracy theorists and avid horse race fans talking.
* Tests from a strand of Phar Laps mane in 2008 have finally proved that he was administered an overdose of arsenic in the last 30 to 40 minutes of his life. The fact that horses were given arsenic as a performance enhancer was taken into account in the research.
* The Australian saying "A heart as big as Phar Lap's" came from, literally, the horses heart (on display in the National Museum) which weighed in at 6.2 kilograms, 2.2 kilograms more than the average horse heart.
* The easily recognised Cup Trophy, initially made of 9 carat gold, is made of 18 carat gold and was designed and hand made by James Steeth for the 1919 cup race. It is made by the same processes to this day. The first 'trophy' in 1861 was a hand beaten gold watch and the winners of the race have taken home many different English made and sometimes no trophy's until the 1919 'loving cup' design was introduced.
Anyway, now you are well armed with Cup conversation starters you now have to choose which best local venue to spread you knowledge in... Good Luck!

We have only just started looking at Melbourne cup but are confidant that it will be a buffet lunch $35p/person in the Auditorium. We only have probably 50 seats left as have 2 large booking already penciled in!

Our MELBOURNE CUP DAY is eagerly looked forward to each year, always a fun way to celebrate the day! This year there's even more happening! With bubbly on arrival, lunch on the lawn, a fashion parade from SeaChange, lots of prizes, before the iconic and very funny Marilyn Monroe in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. Following the film there are of course sweepstakes, dessert and the BIG RACE on the BIG SCREEN! Limited seats and, you guessed it – people are racing in to by their tickets!
