Adams Towing Big Rig Tow in the Convoy for Kids fundraiser 2009 - whatsoncentralcoast imageWhats On Central Coast Logo Button image CENTRAL COAST CONVOY FOR KIDS 2009:
What a Day!
My expectations for a smaller Convoy due to difficult economic times (which deserved a major slap on the wrist for such a lack of faith in these heroes of the highway) were left as road kill on the well populated 2009 Central Coast Convoy route.

There seemed to be a drop in a few of the 'fleeters' numbers but overall there appeared to be more entrants than the 2008 Central Coast Convoy for Kids.

A noted major entry in the fleeters were the Hydro Dog Wash entrants with cars and their trailers and the consistent Adams Towing group that seemed larger rather than smaller - good on you guys!

On our trip down the Central Coast Highway to our vantage point early Sunday morning we noted the many, many Coasties setting up chairs, coffees and some still sleepy but many excited families to cheer on these most generous mobile fundraising giants.

From the lead police car and the Convoy for Kids Car to the final police car we all had a great time waving, catching lollies, oohing and ahhing at some of the brilliant, massive, and sparkling rigs with many proud and smiling children’s faces beaming from the cabins, pulling air horn cables or tossing treats for the kids lining the road, while mum or dad concentrated on driving the rig.

Then it was repack the gear to take the back roads to arrive at the Showgrounds in time for set up and prep for the most gracious offering of up close and personal promo from and for the amazing DAVID RUSSELL STUNT RIDER. I must take this opportunity to apologise for a misconception and subsequent misprint in the Convoy promo regarding David Russell's 'Ring Of Fire' stunt.
It wasn't a ring of fire it was a SOLID WALL of fire!!! Silly me for thinking that this record holding stunt rider would do something as inane as just a ring!

The pre-planned guest ride was in a bit of jeopardy for a while but a technicality from a convoy major sponsor eventually paved the way for the most thrilling bike ride ever for the lil WOCC Rock Chick, CJ, on the back of the bike with David doing mono's, wheelies and all kinds of things to make a mums heart jump but smile with pride at the same time.

There were as per usual many stalls, rides, show bags, exhibitions and goodies on offer during the day at the showground’s as well as a live broadcast from the ever popular STAR FM 104.5 breakfast show team of Rod and the Flack and of course the Roadstars doing their greets and treats for the kids around the grounds.
10 points for Star FM who graciously pounded the airwaves with promo for this most worthy cause. With the demise of the Sun Weekly (a long time regular major sponsor of this event) Star FM made up for some much needed offline promo ground.

With another major turnout for this years Convoy I can only imagine there was a goodly sum raised to help our kids on the Coast.

Thanks to the organisers once again for a brilliant day of entertainment and thanks especially for the generosity of our local Convoy Participants.

Again this year we catured too many vehicles to show them all here. If you were in the Convoy and wondered if we caught you please send me the details of your vehicle and if we have it we will give you a copy as a thank you for your efforts!

It just keeps getting bigger and better!

Prior to this years convoy the local Central Coast Convoy for Kids had raised over $300,000 thus far - add Sunday's efforts and there is a huge injection of funds to aid our local kids.

Heading the convoy again this year were the fire brigade trucks with horns, sirens and lights leading a line up of an estimated 300 plus convoy participants.

There were reportedly a few directional hiccups but the show still went on.

The roads were lined along the way with parents and their kids and just folks who were curious as to what all that noise was about!

The local police were included again and one wonders just how much of a task it is for them for such a huge scale, peaceful representation of our local transport industry.

As usual in the Central Coast Convoy for Kids was Pat Lalor (his 11th convoy participation) with son Sam in one of the STAR TRACK EXPRESS trucks.

Pat's wife Donna Lalor is the spokesperson for the Central Coast Convoy for kids and has been tireless in her efforts with this major fundraiser since her days at The Sun Weekly Newspaper.

Listening to the radio on the morning of the Convoy I was surprised to learn of the cargo Pat and Sam had onboard this year... the one and only Vic Davies from Star 104.5 FM. Star FM were wonderful supporters of the Central Coast Convoy for Kids 2007.
Aside from the bountiful promotion during the week, on the day they were doing live to air from the thick of the fun at the Gosford Showgrounds. Star also had face painting for the kids, giveaways and an endless source of entertaining muisc and banter that is Star FM.

Ashton Scholastic having mechanical problems were unable to participate in the convoy this year but generously sent along many boxes of a fantastic range of childrens books for the kids attending the festivities at the show grounds...

The fun and activities carried on during the course of the day. Exhibitions from the Fire Brigade, The Army Reserves, appropriately, a hearing clinic and many more. Bike riding demonstrations, stalls of goodies and craft, a very busy cafetreia and of course the Big Boys Toys!

I haven't been able to place all the images here of course, there were so many tempting toys to photograph, so if you were in the convoy or would like to enquire about other images please just ask! Send your enquiry to CONVOY PICS 2007

Empathy goes to those who happen to live along the travel route for this wonderful fundraiser who thought that you would finally get that Sunday morning sleep in! Short lived was the thought even before you could hear them coming. With a call from my very excited nephew to say he and his dad were leaving Tuggerah in the convoy now - quick go outside and wait for us to come past ....

What an opportunity to get up close and personal with some amazing machinery and really, really big toys! Leading the charge, our ever vigilant emergency services, intermittently dotted by our mobile police officers and then there was the forlorn looks of those who may not have realised what they were in the middle of - and in the middle they certainly were!

The enthusiasm and excitement of one of this nations largest non protest convoys was truly and wonderfully reflected in the eyes of the kids, proudly sitting up high in the seat beside Dad or Mum and being a part of this massive unity to raise funds for charity. Keep in mind the price of fuel, diesel specifically and the price it has been, far longer than we have been hit with our unleaded price hikes. The humble truck driver has little ability to get anything to do with his "office" at a wholesale price. Nothing he can sell with a profit margin except many hours of long haul or milk run deliveries and if there were a profit to be made of late the incredibly high fuel prices have devoured that. But - there they were, burning fuel to raise funds for the needy. God bless 'em all!.

With horns blaring and lights shining nearly as much as the mirror finished chrome work, the seemingly spit polished black rubber, streak free clean windows and immaculately polished bodies that no self respecting dust particle would dare rest upon - these generous hearted hard working folk made a most spectacular sight for any big wheel lover or anyone that was standing along the way to watch. Thanks to all those who participated - you truly are the backbone of a nation and have hearts of gold.

If you know who owns any of these beautiful toys, or if you are the owner of one of these please drop me a line and I will gladly send you the full size image as a thank you for your efforts... I haven't been able to place all the images here of course so if you were in the convoy please just ask and I will see if I was able to snap a pic of your rig.

Oh and speaking of efforts - As these pics show there are major road works in this area. Progress must go on! There was a delivery made today to one of the home owners that live on this particular part of the roadwork area. Now between barriers and ditches and machinery of all types milling around like an ant farm, little wants to, or does make it to the local residents. The humble postie still finds her way and the waste removal services, well, needless to say, walk a mile with your bin so the poor vehicle operators can get access for the simple luxury of having your rubbish removed... forget visitors (on the upside - no pesky door to door seller) and newspapers -ha! no way; BUT - a wonderful young man from STAR TRACK EXPRESS knocked on the door of one of the residents along there today. With no vehicle in sight the obvious question was "where on earth did you park?" His reply "Around the corner in the back street, I didn't think I would be able to get in".
Wow - talk about commitment. He didn't just leave a note in the letterbox to go to the depot to pick up the parcel, he carried the darn thing all the way to the door. A shameless plug again, but I have not seen that level of customer service in a long time from a large company like that. Well done!.
