Central Coast based singer/songwriter Mark Moldre (surname pronounced “Mol-dray”) was recently holed up in the studio with some of his closest childhood friends, including best mate Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss) and Jamie’s siblings Sophie (piano) and Scott (drums), Reuben Wills (bass) and Adam Lang (banjo, lap slide, pedal steel) recording songs which lyrically entwine the threads of their past and the trials that we face as time moves on.

Moldre grew up in the landscape of Sydney’s Eastern suburbs, riding in the back of his Dad’s old Valiant, snapping photos with an instamatic camera and miming to Beatle and Dylan albums in wallpapered lounge rooms of the 70’s. Mark’s memories, dreams and regrets have become woven into the tapestry and Polaroids of his debut solo album ‘The Waiting Room’. (released March 2010)

A taster EP, Troubled Genius, featuring the first single from the upcoming album was released in Oct 2009 and included an obscure choice of B side – a dark, rustic, almost Tom Waitsian style cover of another childhood memory – Hushabye Mountain, from the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The EP attracted airplay across Australian indie, commercial and community radio including FBi, JJJ, 2serFM, ABC, 3PBSFM and 4ZzZ.

Mark’s second single, ‘In This Life’ is undoubtedly the most pop sounding track on the album and it was quickly added to the FBi and Rage play lists, received spins on JJJ, 2serFM, ABC, Landed Music and many community radio stations – some of whom featured The Waiting Room as Album Of The Week. Due to a recommendation from FBi’s Music Director Dan Zilber the album was also featured as part of an AMRAP mail out. The third single, a foggy waltz entitled ‘This Romantic Day’, was released in Nov 2010 along with 7 bonus tracks.

Moldre, has previously released three albums internationally with his band Hitchcock’s Regret on labels Laughing Outlaw Records and Spacejunk and an album with side project, The Supahip, with good friend and producer Michael Carpenter. For The Waiting Room, Mark chose to work with ARIA nominated producer tim E bandit Powles and producer Michael Carpenter on this, his first solo album. Midnight Oil’s Jim Moginie was on hand to lend some production advice, and fellow Oil Rob Hirst nominated Mark in his Top 10 creative types in Sydney for the 10X10 Creative Sydney Project as part of the VIVID festival and has this to say about the new record:
“A beautifully produced album of melancholic melodies; sad, grand, scary. The Waiting Room is a collection of songs hand-crafted by a musician who’s lived a lot, seen much, and has written it all down – for his own benefit, and ours. One to keep. 4 stars”

On the live scene, Moldre has been steadily building a following by playing shows alongside fine artists like The Church, Mark Seymour, Steve Kilbey, The Gin Club, Jamie Hutchings, iOTA, Toni Collette and Tex Perkins. His shows have a travelling troubadour feel with unusual percussion, played by his trusty wingman Adam Lang, such as a drum kit built around an old suitcase with a motorcycle disc brake as a cymbal and an Arnott’s biscuit tin as a snare plus xylophone, banjo, ukulele, lap slide guitar and electronica.

Mark recently launched The Waiting Room across the East Coast of Australia with a full band to sold out shows in Sydney, Qld North Coast, Newcastle and the Central Coast.
